Originally, the piece had an agate handle, but I wasn’t satisfied with it—I ended up breaking it and decided instead to expose the underlying structure. The most challenging part of working with a composition that is deliberately minimal in detail is identifying and removing everything unnecessary. It requires a sense of proportion and intuition, grounded in the study of rich historical and cultural material. And above all, it takes the courage to make unconventional decisions.
